Michael Shapiro is a travel writer, author and editor whose work has appeared in the travel sections of the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post and San Francisco Chronicle as well as in travel magazines such as Islands. Shapiro recently contributed the text to Guatemala: A Journey Through the Land of the Maya a pictorial book with luminous images by Kraig Lieb, a photographer for Lonely Planet.

In his book, A Sense of Place, Shapiro interviewed the best travel writers in the world: Paul Theroux, Bill Bryson, Pico Iyer, Frances Mayes, Jan Morris and Simon Winchester, and he uses excerpts from their work to show how the masters craft their stories.

His feature about Jan Morris's Wales was the cover story of the May/June 2006 issue of National Geographic Traveler. Shapiro has recently written about the magic of Kauai for Islands magazine and interviewed Studs Terkel for The Sun, a literary journal.
